Genuineness

Genuineness is a central dispositional value for counselors in training because it fosters trust, models authenticity, and strengthens the therapeutic alliance. A genuine counselor communicates honesty through both words and actions, demonstrates congruence between personal values and professional conduct, and approaches clients with a sincere commitment to their growth. This authenticity allows clients to feel safe in being open and fosters a collaborative environment for positive change.

The designated artifact, Elements of a Successful Therapeutic Relationship (CNL-515), highlights the role of genuineness in building effective counselor–client relationships. In the artifact, I examined the qualities that strengthen rapport, including trustworthiness, fairness, and transparency. I also reflected on how congruence between a counselor’s statements and behaviors builds credibility and supports a safe space for clients to share openly. The discussion emphasized that genuineness is not simply self-disclosure but rather a balance between authenticity and maintaining professional boundaries, consistent with the guiding question for this disposition, which asks how a counselor in training demonstrates genuineness across multiple contexts.

This competency aligns with ACA Code of Ethics Standard A.1.a, which prioritizes respecting the dignity and promoting the welfare of clients, and A.4.b, which emphasizes being truthful while respecting diversity in clients’ experiences. It also reflects CACREP Standards 2.F.5.f, which addresses ethical and culturally relevant strategies for building counseling relationships, and 2.F.2.h, which emphasizes strategies for understanding and respecting cultural diversity in the counseling process.

This artifact was revised after receiving instructor feedback to expand on the practical applications of genuineness in diverse client scenarios. In response, I added examples of how authentic communication can be adapted to clients from different cultural backgrounds and with varying comfort levels in self-disclosure. This revision deepened my understanding that genuineness is not a static personality trait but a deliberate professional practice that requires both self-awareness and cultural sensitivity in order to strengthen trust and promote client well-being.
